Success was sweet for Jeff Hort Engineering and their quick donut turn around
Late afternoon on Tuesday 30th July, OneSteel Metalcentre Orange received an urgent enquiry from Craig Hort, General Manager of Jeff Hort Engineering regarding a 1200 x 1200 x 80mm plate “or whatever you can get your hands on”. Jeff Hort Engineering is a major provider of engineering equipment and maintenance services both locally, nationally and now internationally.
Jake Weber of OneSteel Metalcentre Orange was able to track down a 2400 x 2500 plate from Wetherill Park, to satisfy the urgency of the situation, although this was going to cost the customer $5,500, plus transport, wastage and considerable time searching for someone to cut it.
Further enquiry and collaboration from Orange and Wetherill Park Location Managers Jeff Pawsey and Grant Norman on Wednesday morning, determined that the plate was for an 1180mm diameter “donut” to be used as a flange for a repair job where a client’s equipment had broken down.
Upon understanding the customer need, Grant was able to use the processing capability at Wetherill Park to cut the donut on the Wednesday, ready for afternoon pick-up. The massive plate was expertly cut by our experienced operator Harry Simons thereby saving significant additional time and rework, reduced wastage and provided a more cost effective outcome for Jeff Hort Engineering with a quicker turn around for his customer. Craig Hort had also approached a competitive Toll Processor; however they were unable to match our level of service.
Instead of shipping several tonnes, which would have required OneSteel Metalcentre Orange were able to deliver a 980kg donut to the Jeff Hort Engineering premises on Thursday morning. Location Manager Jeff Pawsey topped this off with a delivery of fresh donuts to keep the Jeff Hort Engineering Team going whilst they fabricate the flange.
Nicole Mackenzie, the Senior Purchasing Officer from Jeff Hort Engineering said of the result: “I was pleasantly surprised when OneSteel were able to deliver the fabricated product the next day. “
